We believe that the long-term needs of the disabled community are
best met through community-based rehabilitation and sustainable
development. Therefore, we support and implement the production
of low-cost assistive technology (AT) within developing nations.
By setting up not-for-profit AT workshops where they are needed
most, and by using local materials and training local disabled and
able-bodied workers, such equipment can be produced at a fraction of
the cost of North American devices. Local production creates jobs
and improves the local economy while producing affordable assistive
technology for individuals throughout the region. Furthermore, such
production empowers the community to meet its own needs and removes
dependence on outside sources.
We
also encourage families to build their own devices and provide the
designs, training, and advice necessary to do so.
