Equip KIDS (Kids In Developing Societies) International
is a non-sectarian, non-governmental, grassroots, charitable
organization dedicated to promoting the full inclusion and
participation of children with disabilities around the world.
Our current efforts are focused in Peru.
We work directly
with children and their families through the provision of
assistive technology (such as wheelchairs, walkers and
communication devices), and we support families, professionals
and community organizations through training, support and
mentoring. We
believe that every child has the right to mobility,
communication and education and we are committed to providing
the tools disabled children require to meet and exceed these
needs. We
certainly understand the enormity of the tasks ahead of us, but
we have also seen what a huge difference the smallest of steps
can make in the lives of these children. |
|
Take, for example,
Diana, a bright-eyed 6 year-old with
Cerebral Palsy from southern Peru. Diana lives with her
mother and 3 siblings in a loving, yet simple home. At 6, she is
now too big to be carried, however with proper seating and a
sturdy wheelchair, she is able to go outside with the other
children to play, and she is able to attend school. Due to her
physical disability, Diana cannot speak, but she has learned to
communicate by pointing to symbols and words in a book. With her
new mobility and communication strategies in hand, Diana is able
to participate in her family, community and school life and will
have many new opportunities open up to her in the future. |

|
Diana is just one
child among millions in similar circumstances around the world.
However, with every
child we help, we are one step closer to our goal. |
